Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion, 2110 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia
With Donald St. Pierre, Piano and Adrienne Knauer, Harp
English composer Jonathan Dove’s brilliant score The Passing of the Year concludes our season with a joyous celebration of life’s cycles. Set to poetry by William Blake, Emily Dickinson, and Alfred Lord Tennyson, this piece for double chorus and piano is poignant, playful, and entertaining from beginning to end. Dove “knows how to rouse passions and raise smiles” (The Observer), and has been compared favorably to the undisputed English master Benjamin Britten. The program also features other season-themed music by earlier English greats Ralph Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten. Additionally featured are the final two world premieres from the “Alleluias for Alan” series, commissioned to celebrate the life and legacy of Conductor Laureate Alan Harler upon his retirement from Mendelssohn Club after 27 years.
