This concert features works about transition and continuity, endings and beginnings. Looking back on your time as Associate Artistic Director, what moments or experiences with the chorus have most shaped you as an artist and leader, and how do you see those experiences influencing the next chapter of your artistic journey?
Moments of change are often the most difficult times in our lives, even for those of us who don’t fear it. MCP has gone through many of these moments, especially during this season. I have the very special position of frequently talking through these beginnings, transitions, and endings with singers individually. Each person has their own way of processing and of sharing, and I’m always honored to experience it.
But after each individual point of contact, I then see how they fit their various hearts into a collective unit and somehow it all gels. Somehow, each grief and each joy fits right next to another. Somehow, the magic of MCP appears for each and every moment of change, and that has given me a constant reminder of why we’re all here: to take care of each other.
I will take that with me wherever I go. It’s part of the standard that has been set and what I have and will continue to expect from all choirs, from all friends, from all family members, and from myself - to take care of one another.
